Pattern of Life

These things will mould you,
Child of mine,
Will fashion, quietly, the contour
Of your years:

The tears you shed,
The friends you make,
The books you read,
The joy you take
In viewing all men
As your brothers;
The songs you learn
To know and love,
Abiding faith in God, above
All others.

Choose wisely, carefully, then,
Of books and friends and songs.
Open your heart to love of God and men;
For, only then, will your heart sing,
Your soul take wing.
The pattern of your life and wisdom be
A glamorous, glowing, lasting thing
For all eternity!
