Envy

I wish that I might take you
By the hand
And lead you, son,
To stand,
Politely, face to face with God.
I’m sure that He would nod,
And smile into your brown eyes,
When I introduced you.
I think, perhaps, He’d say,
In the same envious way
Great gentlemen on earth do:
“It seems but yesterday
I was a lad like you!”
