There are several families in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, which are related to the Vorst and André families through marriages. One family, the Oberle family, is related to both the Vorst and the André families. Damian André married Julia Hauck whose sister Rosina married Louis Naumann.

Some Vorst relations from Germany came to settle in Missouri – the Langhardts and Joseph Paul Vorst, the artist. The Zieglers and the Moores are included in the Vorst Family book.

Through Anna Marie Scherer, who married Joseph Johannes Vorst, the family is related to the many Scherers and also the Fitzkams in Sainte Genevieve.

Here is a list of the families in this edition:

      • Nicholas Hauck
      • Louis Naumann
      • Joseph Oberle
      • Johann Langhardt
      • Nicholas Scherer
      • Philip Fitzkam
      • Jean Francois DuPont (added 7/10/11)
      • Louis J. DelCommune (added 7/2/11)

The color-coding throughout these reports begins with the generation of my grandparents, Louise André and Léon Vorst, being pink and working back through brown, green and blue. Hopefully this will make it easier to follow the generations.

1. Louis Joseph NAUMANN

Birth: 4 Jul 1842, Wetter, Kreis Marburg, Hessen
Death: 16 Feb 1905, Sainte Genevieve County, MO
Burial: 19 Feb 1905, Valle Spring Cemetery, Ste. Genevieve, MO
Father: Christian NAUMANN (~1815-)
Mother: Catharine Elizabeth JUNCK (~1814-)
Occ: Butcher, like his father. Served as sheriff.

"Louis Naumann, county collector for Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., was born in the town of Wetter, Kreis Marburg, Kursessen, July 4, 1842, and is the son of Christain and Elizabeth (Junk) Naumann. The father came to America in 1850 and settled in Philadelphia, where, three years later, his family came. In 1855 they removed to Ste. Genevieve, Mo., where the father followed his trade of butcher, which occupation he followed until his death. Louis Naumann learned his father's trade, and in 1865 he established a meat market at Ste. Genevieve which he still conducts. In 1865 he married Miss Rosa Haug, a native of St. Louis, Mo., who came to Ste. Genevieve with her parents when a child. This union resulted in the birth of thirteen children, nine of whom are living. In 1880 he was elected sheriff of the county, and reelected in 1882. In 1886 he was elected to his present position, that of county collector. The family are members of the Catholic church, and are universally respected."  Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, published in 1888, page 607.

Our friend Mr. Joseph Beck is quite a stock raiser. Last Wednesday he brought two steers to town whose aggregate weight was 2,415 pounds. He sold them to Mr. L. Naumann for the snug little sum of $120.

The Str. Charles Morgan was returning from an excursion last Saturday night when, at Horse Shoe Bend, she collided with the Central City, which was bound for Memphis with a cargo of flour and produce. The Central City was struck admidships and immediately sank. The crew were all saved but the cargo is a total loss, the river being covered with barrels of flour, whiskey, etc., of which Mr. NAUMAN has 12 barrels, Mr. BRICKEY 100, and others more or less. There are said to have been between two and three thousand barrels of flour on board.

One day this past week Mr. L. Naumann invited us to take a look at his Easter beeves. They consisted of two fat yearling calves, weighing 570 and 680 pounds respectively. One was raised by our enterprising farmer, Mr. I. Ziegler, and the
other was fattened by Mr. Naumann himself.

Newspaper - 3/21/1896
Louis Naumann contracted for milk, butter, eggs and poultry to the Government workers in the Ste. Genevieve area.

Last Monday morning Paul L. Lempke surveyed and laid out for Louis Naumann seven city lots, of 60 feet front on the north side of Seraphin Street by 260 feet deep. He will survey some more lots on the south side of the same street. This is a very desirable parcel of city lots.

According to the Fair Play, February 25, 1905, Mr. Naumann killed himself "by severing the arteries of his left hand with a paper knife."

Looking Back:
March 1886
"Monday was a day that will occupy a prominent place in the memory of Miss Lulu Naumann, one of Ste. Genevieve's estimable and darling young ladies, for years to come. On that day she commenced the seventeenth year of her journey through life, and the event was celebrated in grand style by her many friends. At an early hour of the evening a large crowd of young ladies and gentlemen assembled at the residence of Mrs. Julia ANDRÉ, Miss Lulu's aunt, who had been previously informed of the intention of the young folks and had made preparations for the reception and guests. Miss Lulu was then sent for. Wondering what in the world Aunt Julia wanted, the young lady merrily tripped over to her aunt's house and on entering the house, was almost overcome with surprise and astonishment by being told that her friends had gathered there for the purpose of celebrating her birthday. She was equal to the occasion, however, and soon mingled with the crowd and assisted in making the evening one of merriment and enjoyment to all. Several of our best musicians being present, dancing  was soon commenced, and kept up for several hours. An excellent supper was prepared to which all present did ample justice. At a late hour the young folks, singing and laughing in the flush of youth, wended their way homeward, pleased with the evening's fun. Miss Lulu is quite a favorite with her companions and they, together with this paper, wish her a long, joyful life and hope that her future birthdays will be as free from care and passed as the one just celebrated."
