There are several families in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, which are related to the Vorst and André families through marriages. One family, the Oberle family, is related to both the Vorst and the André families. Damian André married Julia Hauck whose sister Rosina married Louis Naumann.

Some Vorst relations from Germany came to settle in Missouri – the Langhardts and Joseph Paul Vorst, the artist. The Zieglers and the Moores are included in the Vorst Family book.

Through Anna Marie Scherer, who married Joseph Johannes Vorst, the family is related to the many Scherers and also the Fitzkams in Sainte Genevieve.

Here is a list of the families in this edition:

      • Nicholas Hauck
      • Louis Naumann
      • Joseph Oberle
      • Johann Langhardt
      • Nicholas Scherer
      • Philip Fitzkam
      • Jean Francois DuPont (added 7/10/11)
      • Louis J. DelCommune (added 7/2/11)

The color-coding throughout these reports begins with the generation of my grandparents, Louise André and Léon Vorst, being pink and working back through brown, green and blue. Hopefully this will make it easier to follow the generations.

1.4 Nicholas HAUCK

Birth: 10 Dec 1824, Grosselfingen, Hechingen, Germany
or 1828, Hechingen, Germany
Death: 18 Oct 1896, Sainte Genevieve, MO
Occ: 1860, According to Census-Master Shoemaker

Nicholas Hauck was born in Germany to Joseph Hauck and Rosalie Dehner. He learned the shoemaker trade before leaving Germany. Nicholas came to America in the 1840's. A Nicholas Hauck appears on a passenger list for the ship “John Holland” sailing from Le Havre to New Orleans. Also on the list are several Dehners, including Xaver Dehner, age 23; and Catherine Keck, age 25. The passengers were all farmers from Baden going to Missouri. Could this possibly be our Nicholas?

Nicholas married Catherine Barbara Keck in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1848, The witnesses to their marriage were Eustachus Buck/Beck & Philip Volm. They had their first two children in St. Louis. Sometime before March of 1853, when their third child was born, the family moved to Ste. Genevieve.

Nicholas and his wife, Catherine Barbara, had nine children in all. The first seven were girls. The story was always told that in 1861 when his first son was born Nicholas Hauck named him after famous Confederates. He rode through town in a drunken celebration, shouting the child's name, which did not go over well with the Union troops in the area. Anxious to catch him they surrounded his house and made his wife, Barbara, take down the window coverings so that they would be able to see if he tried to sneak into the house during the night. Barbara had to stand near the corner of the room and hold her skirts out at the side to hide the girls as they would dress. To make matters worse, one of the soldiers had a crush on one of the older girls.

By 1860 Nicholas owned real estate valued at $1500.00 and had personal property valued at $1000.00. Tax records for 1861 show that he paid taxes on two pieces of real estate. One was a house and lot located on the west side of Fourth Street and bounded by the Gabouri Creek on the south; the other was a house and lot in Kern's Addition. Each property was valued at $600.00.

Birth: 8 Jan 1857, Sainte Genevieve, MO
Death: 30 Sep 1912, Sainte Genevieve, MO
Burial: 2 Oct 1912, Valle Spring Cemetery, Ste. Genevieve MO

Julia was one of the nine children born to Nicholas Hauck and Catherine Barbara Keck. Their first seven children were daughters. Julia was a beautiful girl who married Damien André in 1874, before she was even eighteen. After only five and a half years she became a widow. The 1880 census shows that she and her two young daughters then became members of the household of Sophia Hauck Nauman, Julia's oldest sister, and Sophia's husband, Louis Nauman. The home was atop the hill on Seraphin Street and is now called the Hettig-Naumann House. Later with her second husband, John W. Shaw, Julia had two more daughters, Myrtle and Anna.

Obituary from newspaper:
Died.
At her home Monday, Sept. 30, at 9:30 p. m., after a lingering illness, Julia Margaret Shaw, beloved wife of John W. Shaw and dear mother of Mrs. Wm. Oberle and Mrs. Leon Vorst, and Misses Anna and Myrtle Shaw.
Mrs. John Shaw, nee Julia Margaret Hauck, was born in this city January 8, 1857. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Hauck. She was first married to Damien André, who died about 33 years ago. Two children were born, Mrs. Wm. Oberle and Mrs. Leon Vorst. Nine years after the death of her first husband she was married to John W. Shaw, to which two children were born, Misses Anna and Myrtle Shaw.
Henry Knamm, of St. Louis, was here and acted as pall bearer. Mr. Knamm was a close friend of the deceased and made his first Communion with her, was groomsman at her wedding to John Shaw, and stood as Godfather for Miss Anna Shaw, oldest daughter of John Shaw.
The funeral took place from the Catholic Church Wednesday afternoon and the remains were interred at Valle Spring cemetery.

Damien André, Julia’s first husband, had been buried in the old Memorial Cemetery in 1880. His daughter, Louise Vorst, had his body moved to the new Valle Spring Cemetery. According to "Looking Back" in the October 7, 1966 issue of the Fair Play newspaper, Julia's body was exhumed and her remains where transferred by John Basler to the Vorst plot sometime during September of 1916. Damian and Julia now lie together in the Leon Vorst plot with the bodies of many of the other family members. Julia's second husband, Grandpa Shaw, is buried alone in the Protestant section of the cemetery. Had Julia first been buried with John Shaw and moved from there?

Death: 13 Feb 1941, Sainte Genevieve, MO
Burial: Valle Spring Cemetery, Ste. Genevieve, MO

Louise Hauck, "Aunt Lulu", outlived several husbands and was considered the town's authority on men. The story was that one day in 1873 Jesse James came to Sainte Genevieve to rob the bank. Aunt Lulu saw him ride off over the hill. Someone asked her if he was as good-looking as every one said he was. She replied, "He looked just like any other man, but he had a mighty pretty horse!" It is doubtful that it was really Jesse James who robbed the bank and Lulu would have only been 14 years old but it still makes a good story.

Joseph’s father was a Southern sympathizer during the Civil War and named his first son after several famous Confederates.

Just two months prior to Joseph’s birth a contingent of Union soldiers came up the river from Cape Girardeau to Ste. Genevieve in order to remove the money from the Merchant Bank and deliver it to St. Louis. It was feared that the Confederate General Meriwether Jeff Thompson, the Swamp Fox, might “liberate” the money.
